Might be the diff. Might be the halfshafts. Get the car in the air and start playing with things. Pop out the fill plug and have a feel.

Take a look at it. Is it wet from leaking?

This reminds me... I need to replace the seal on mine before I run out of fluid...

I should make a sticky thread in Non-Roadster...
I could title it: "Logan's Bimmer is broken".

is the diff w/stub shafts from a 1.6? If so, then yes. If from a 1.8, then no.

so this noise in the diff is gone when i turn. and i haven't even touched it. but a new problem occurred tto day while i was driving now when i put it in first or 2nd or any gear i get this really bad noise like my tranny is going to fall off or something in the clutch pressure plate and when i get going i cant step on it. cause it starts making hella loud clunking noises

lets just say you could spend the tires when the car was in gear.. so i droped the diff today with some friends and the muffler. so how would i be able to take the diff housing apart i took at all the bolts on the diff and it isnt moving.. i wanna see the carnage.

If you've still got your open diff in, it's normal. They just spin in opposite directions.

You need to pop out the stub shafts. Then you'll probably need to pop the pumpkin loose with either a rubber mallet (if you don't want to mess up the sealing surface) or a screwdriver (if you don't care).

About the tires spinning if you spin one tire the other one wouldnt move. and if you tried to spin them at the same time they would lock up then break free with a clunk.. and this diff is garbage and the diff pried open but wont come out.. is that cause of the stub shafts? and how do i take those out?

Yes.

With a prybar, or a long screwdriver. Stick it between the case and the stub shaft. Give it a quick, firm tug. Very firm. The stub shaft should pop right out, but it's easier if the diff's still in the car.

I didn't say it was impossible out of the chassis, but it's easier than trying to hold it with two hands and pop them loose with your third...
